Radiotherapy Friesland chooses IT that brings peace of mind and continuity

“Radiation treatments must always continue. That means you need to be able to trust the people managing your IT.”
Customer context
Radiotherapy Friesland operates with a compact internal IT team responsible for a complex healthcare environment. Within that environment, systems must remain stable, secure and continuously available. For specialist expertise and additional capacity, the organization works together with Brightcare, part of Reliance. That support ranges from network management and infrastructure to project support and day-to-day IT management. “They strengthen our team in areas where specific expertise is needed,” says Erik Mast, Head of ICT at Radiotherapy Friesland.
Shortly before Erik Mast joined Radiotherapy Friesland, the need arose for further professionalization of the IT environment. Through an interim manager, Reliance (formerly Brightcare) came into the picture. “What I know is that Reliance was very flexible, able to deliver quickly and immediately took over the management support that was needed.” The organization was mainly looking for a partner that was not only technically strong, but also understood how important continuity is within healthcare.
Reason for
change
Challenge
Within a healthcare environment, IT is directly connected to day-to-day operations. Downtime or disruptions immediately impact both employees and patients. At the same time, the need for further modernization of the infrastructure continued to grow. This included network renewal, new server environments, improved backup strategies and the implementation of a new electronic patient record system (EPR). Meanwhile, day-to-day operations still needed to continue without interruption. “Our own people needed to focus on projects and guidance within the organization, while day-to-day IT operations continued running smoothly.”
Reliance supports Radiotherapy Friesland in areas including network management, infrastructure and specialist technical challenges.
This includes:
- firewalls and switches;
- VLAN configurations;
- server and storage environments;
- backup strategies; and
- support during migrations and implementations.
During the implementation of a new EPR system, Reliance also took over a large part of the daily IT management. This created room within the internal team to focus fully on the project.
“That created peace of mind. Our own people could focus on the transition while day-to-day IT operations simply continued.” In recent years, the environment was further modernized with, among other things, a new Nutanix environment, renewed Wi-Fi infrastructure and improved system integrations.
Approach
Collaboration
What Radiotherapy Friesland values most is the way Reliance adapts alongside the organization. As the internal IT department continued to grow, both parties evaluated which activities could be handled internally and which specialist components were better left externally managed.
“We handle internally what makes sense and bring in specialist expertise where needed. That flexibility works very well.” According to Erik, another strength lies in Reliance’s understanding of the healthcare environment. “Reliance understands how critical our environment is. You do not constantly have to explain why certain processes are so important.”
The personal approach also plays an important role. Communication lines are short and the familiar faces are well known within the organization. “We did not want to become just another number within a larger organization, and fortunately that is not how it feels.”

Results and future development
The collaboration with Reliance gave Radiotherapy Friesland the room to continue building a modern, stable and secure IT environment. Servers were renewed, the network was modernized and systems became better integrated. The new EPR system also enabled more efficient processes and real-time insights for patients. Perhaps even more importantly: the foundation is now in place. Employees can rely on systems that work, while the internal team has room to look ahead instead of constantly putting out fires.
That is exactly where Radiotherapy Friesland sees the value of its collaboration with Reliance. Not in IT as a goal in itself, but in IT that evolves alongside the organization and brings peace of mind to daily operations. So healthcare can continue. Today, tomorrow and in the long term.
