Customer context
BS automatisering supports a large part of the passenger transportation market with industry-specific software solutions. Over the years, the company has established a strong position in the sector, where reliability and continuity are directly linked to the daily operations of its customers. When BS automatisering became part of Vertical Horizon, the IT environment was reassessed. Systems that had served the organization well for years needed to become more professional, secure and less dependent on existing processes and individual expertise. "We wanted to be ready for the next stage," says Matthijs Dessing. "The foundation had to be solid and capable of supporting future growth."
The transformation was about more than technology alone. For many years, BS automatisering had relied on open-source solutions and internally managed systems. While this approach worked well, it also created dependencies on specific people and established ways of working. At the same time, requirements around security, management and business continuity continued to evolve."In the past, we were responsible for updating and maintaining everything ourselves," says Matthijs. "Reliance now takes care of that for us. That provides peace of mind." The organization also wanted to ensure that new technologies would support employees rather than disrupt established workflows. Modernization needed to improve security and manageability without adding unnecessary complexity to daily operations.
Reason for
change
Challenge
The challenge was not only modernizing the IT environment, but also managing change within an organization built on specialist knowledge and long-established working practices. "You are not only dealing with technology, but also with culture," Matthijs explains.Developers wanted to maintain flexibility and a degree of local control over their work environments. At the same time, the organization needed a more secure and manageable infrastructure. The impact of downtime was another important consideration. Within the passenger transportation sector, systems are directly connected to the operational processes of customers. "It is business-critical," says Matthijs. "Without our systems, transportation services such as patient transport to hospitals would simply stop."
Together with Reliance, BS automatisering modernized its IT environment step by step. The organization migrated to a Microsoft-based environment with new digital workplaces, a new mail platform and centralized management. Additional measures were implemented to strengthen security and access management. This included the introduction of a password manager and a new approach to local administrator rights. "Instead of permanently granting elevated permissions, employees can now request temporary access when needed," Matthijs explains. Significant changes were also made to management and support processes. Reliance took over a large portion of the day-to-day IT management, reducing dependency on a small number of internal specialists and creating a more sustainable operational model.
Approach
Collaboration
For BS automatisering, it remained important that an IT partner would do more than simply deliver services. "We are looking for more than just a supplier," says Matthijs. "We want a partner who understands what we need."According to him, Reliance's understanding of both the organization and the transportation sector helps ensure that solutions align closely with business requirements. As a result, communication remains straightforward and decision-making can happen quickly. While the transition required careful coordination and attention, the relationship gradually developed into a partnership focused on management, security and continuity.
