AKD is one of the largest law, civil-law notary and tax advisory firms in the Netherlands. With more than six hundred employees and multiple offices across the Benelux, secure and reliable digital working is essential. “Our employees increasingly work remotely,” says Joost Reynvaan, Head of ICT at AKD. “You do not want to depend on traditional VPN connections for that.” For an organization that works daily with confidential case files, contracts and client information, IT is not merely supportive, but directly connected to continuity, compliance and trust.
The existing VPN solutions increasingly no longer matched the way employees worked. Hybrid working became permanent and the need for secure, scalable access grew rapidly. “Our employees needed remote access to confidential documents without risks,” says Joost. “But with the old VPN, that was neither workable nor robust enough for us.”
AKD explored several solutions and ultimately chose Zscaler because of its combination of security, simplicity and scalability.
“With more than six hundred employees, we wanted an environment with high availability. Zscaler provided a way to connect multiple data centers and cloud applications without complicated network structures.”

For AKD, security is not just about technology. Confidentiality and availability are essential conditions within the organization. “Our clients trust us with their most sensitive information,” Joost explains. “That means security cannot be optional; it has to be the standard.” At the same time, the solution had to remain user-friendly. Employees need to work securely without extra complexity or technical barriers. Compliance and auditability also play an important role. AKD must be able to demonstrate who accessed systems and which risks or incidents were detected.
AKD implemented Zscaler Internet Access (ZIA) and Zscaler Private Access (ZPA). This allows internet traffic to be monitored, risky websites to be blocked automatically and employees to securely access internal applications without a traditional VPN. “ZIA ensures all traffic is monitored. ZPA enables employees to securely access their files, regardless of where they are working.”
Reliance supports AKD as an optimization partner. Not only technically, but also strategically and consultatively. The specialists actively contribute ideas for improvements, new functionalities and optimizations within the environment. “They regularly reach out with advice. ‘Have you already considered this?’ That involvement is valuable.”
According to Joost, the implementation went smoothly. “Yes, there was a hiccup as well. But with support from Zscaler and Reliance, it was resolved quickly. The most important thing is that the environment runs stably and is regularly reviewed to see what can be improved further.”
